Respect and Real Talk: The Adult Child-Parent Relationship w/ Dr. Mariam Sheibani

Our relationship with our parents is one of the most sacred ties in Islam — a bond built on mercy, gratitude, and honor. Yet as we grow into adulthood, maintaining that bond can come with new questions: How do we show respect while setting boundaries? What do we do when these relationships are complicated ones? How do we balance obedience with honesty? What are our parents' rights over us, and (hot take!) what are ours over them?

Center DC is joined by the illustrious Dr. Mariam Sheibani, an Islamic scholar and community builder, to unpack these complicated topics. Through an interactive workshop, participants will learn to practice respect with healthy boundaries with their parents in adulthood — looking to the Qur’an and the life of the Prophet PBUH for guiding principles. Through reflection, group discussion, and practical exercises, we’ll seek ways to strengthen our family relationships while nurturing emotional and spiritual well-being. Together, we will learn to nurture love, patience, and mutual understanding between generations, for the sake of Allah.

About our speaker
Dr. Mariam Sheibani is a scholar, educator, and researcher. She is an Assistant Professor of Islamic Thought at Brandeis University and a globally-recognized scholar who is passionate about public education and community building. Dr. Sheibani holds an MA in Legal Studies, a second MA and a PhD in Islamic Thought from the University of Chicago and completed her postdoc training from Harvard Law School. Over the past two decades, she has studied the classical religious sciences with Muslim scholars from Turkey, Syria, Jordan, North America, and West Africa. Dr. Mariam offers paradigms and frameworks for coherently integrating religious commitment with lived experience. She empowers people to think through critical issues, co-construct solutions to shared challenges, and offer practical tools for cultivating a God-centered and meaningful spiritual life.
