I came up with 5 broad modules that we will center our discussions/gatherings around:
- Identity, Faith, and Being Muslim in America
- Purpose, Service, Responsibility
- Relationships (parents, siblings, extended family)
- Loss, Grief, & Resilience
- Celebration, Reflection, Next Steps.
I have a list of discussion questions that would help kickstart conversations and will also provide some short stories, essays, videos on these topics. On some modules, I would like us to do something more creative. I have an idea of reading poems or canvas paintings for at least 2 days, but I'm open to more ideas.
As someone of Pakistani origin, my sources may be influenced by my background (I love Urdu afsanas), so I would love it if other people also contribute.
My home is a space for community and mutual respect. I’ll be providing chai and some snack items at the minimum, but would love it if we could all pitch in even if it is simply using the things in my kitchen: a 14 minute walk from Fort Totten Metro in NE DC!
Connection cannot be forced, but I want this group to have many of the pre-requisites to a respectful community.
